As part of the Open Doors Construction week, Tilbury Douglas invited two groups of students in construction at Stockport College to visit a live construction site at Stepping Hill Hospital.
Tilbury Douglas is working on a £23m project in the new Emergency & Urgent Care Campus.
The groups visited the site office first, learning about the hospital development, and about the role of a Project Manager from Darren Westcott.
The students then toured the site with Darren Westcott and Ross Woodhouse, the site manager.
Highlights were the new roof, seeing concrete being pumped up to make the floor of the 2nd storey, and the partitions and first fix in the refurbished sections of the build.
For most of our students, this was the first time they have ever visited such a large-scale project and experienced firsthand what it would be like to work in this type of industry.
Another group of our Stockport students visited John Sisk Ltd for Open Doors Construction week, going on-site to Stockport Weir Mill.
Stockport’s historic Weir Mill is set to become the centerpiece of a creative new neighbourhood, with Capital&Centric’s £60 million transformation officially underway.
With funding in place from Stockport Council and Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), work has now started on site. Main contractor SISK has begun prepping the site, paving the way for construction of over 250 design-led apartments across the restored listed Victorian mill buildings and a two neighbouring new-build blocks.
Once complete, it’ll be a neighbourhood oozing with personality and packed with spaces for residents and visitors to explore. From new lush greenery and outdoor hangouts, to a mix of indie bars, restaurants and shops, Weir Mill has been designed to be a stand-out destination for Stockport Town Centre West.
It’s set to feature distinct zones with different vibes, from the contemplative garden space of West Courtyard to Weavers Square, a buzzing new public space for markets, DJ sets and cultural pop-ups.
Open Doors week provides an opportunity for young people and those looking for a change of career to find out what the industry has to offer by going behind the site hoardings and seeing the diverse range of opportunities available.
TCG are delighted to introduce these experiences to our students, and we thank the employers involved for providing exposure and valuable industry insights to inspire tomorrow’s talent in construction.
