Higher Education students celebrated at graduation event

University Centre Stockport College students were celebrated at a special graduation ceremony held at Stockport Town Hall.

With over 525 attendees, including 117 graduates, their families, staff, and special guests, the event was a proud moment for all involved in recognising the students’ hard work and dedication.

Special guests included the Mayors of Stockport and Trafford, the CEO of Stockport Council, and representatives from Sheffield Hallam University and the Association of Colleges.

Stockport College alumni, Wayne Jones, founder and CEO of Improbus Consultancy, delivered an inspiring keynote address encouraging the graduates to embrace their future with confidence.

He said: “A huge congratulations to all the graduates. The qualifications you have achieved are now your passport to go and travel, and this is just the start of your journey. Go and live your dreams.”

The ceremony reflected the diverse journeys of the graduates, many of whom balanced their studies with work and personal responsibilities. Special awards were given to seven students who went above and beyond to achieve success.

One of those students was Farrukh Hameed who was named Higher Education Student of the Year 2024 for Early Years in recognition of her dedication and accomplishments.

Her passion for education grew when she began tutoring her own children and others, helping them prepare for grammar school entrance exams.

As her children grew more independent, Farrukh decided to revisit her own educational path which brought her to University Centre Stockport College to explore how she could formalise her teaching skills.

She said: “University Centre Stockport College was a perfect fit for me, being only 20 minutes away, and the support I received throughout my studies was invaluable. I’d highly recommend the university centre to anyone considering returning to education.”

James Scott, Principal and CEO of The Trafford and Stockport College Group, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students, many who return to education while balancing work, family, and other commitments.

“Their dedication and resilience are truly inspiring, and their success is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. They show that with hard work and determination, anything is possible, and they are an example to us all.”
